"A lot of my music
tends to be about cheating your destiny and changing what you are supposed
to be", says Tom.
Marry this kind of
inspired intent with finely crafted tunes, expressed with a potent and
impassioned vocal that carries his vivid lyrics and hypnotic, touching
music and you get one of the most acclaimed new singer-songwriters.
Upon the release of his eponymously titled debut album, last autumn, that
included his first single 'You Cut Her Hair', he was lauded as the new
everyone, from yorke, buckley and drake to stipe, simon, thompson and
costello.
Comparisons can be
the curse, but there does appear to be something in the water in 2001.
He is a contemporary of the likes of Turin Brakes, Kathryn
Williams and Badly Drawn Boy etc., which hopefully signifies the ears
of the uk youth are discerning.
Tom has gigged almost
non stop since his album was released, most notably at the invitation
of the legendary Scott Walker at London's Meltdown Festival, where he
played with Elliot Smith.
He has also done shows with Paul Weller, Mark
Eitzel, Willard Grany Conspiracy, along with performing on Jools Holland's
Later. Midlanders may have caught Tom at The Songwriters Festival in the
summer of '99 on the same bill as Mark Eitzel and Carina Round or last
year at The Flapper & Firkin with It's Jo & Danny.
There is also a very special night to catch him before he get's to Ronnie
Scott's this time round. He is supporting Dido on her UK tour, which calls
in at The Academy on Tue. 10 April.
