SANDY DILLON

IF there is an artist to discover, satisfy those hungry yearnings and be able to talk about for years to come, look no further.

Her album ELECTRIC CHAIR (One Little Indian) has just been released to overwhelming acclaim. She sees her songs as 'modern blues' and states it is about "things you always wanted to stand up in church and scream about", also adding "torch songs where the woman doesn't get burnt".
Originally from Boston in the USA, she studied jazz and classical at the prestigious 'Berklee School Of Music', which included composing a symphony, whilst also keeping her job of playing piano in a local bar, performing the songs of Billie Holliday, Janis Joplin and Dinah Washington.
She later moved to New York, living out of the infamous 'Chelsea Hotel', whilst playing the part of Janis Joplin in a Broadway musical.
This led to Tony Defries (manager of David Bowie and Iggy Pop) who signed her to the renowned Elektra Records label, where she made two albums that also featured Mick Ronson (Bowie), Dieter Meier (Yello) and Jaco Pastorious as guests.
Sandy's songs often have sparse and restrained arrangements, which allow perfectly for her searing, spooky, idiosyncratic and beguiling vocal to come through a very raw and authentic sound. She chose her band for their 'unique loyalty to chaos', partly out of her fascination with Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, not entirely dis-similar to PJ Harvey.

THE TIMES Metro wrote: "her voice: a rasping husky wheeze, it's pitched between the smoky desperation of Janis Joplin and gravelly tones of Tom Waits, with lyrics that tread between the gothic fairytales of Nick Cave and the twisted humour of Waits".
We urge you to not miss this rare and inspiring visit to Ronnies
