LLOYD Cole
and the Commotions debuted with the album 'Rattlesnakes' which is now
widely regarded as a timeless classic and its influence can be felt time
and time again.
It contained absolute gems like 'Perfect Skin', 'Forest Fire' and 'Are
You Ready To Be Heartbroken?' Lloyd himself soon acquired a reputation
for his stylish croon and articulate lyrics, whilst the bands jangly guitars
nodded towards Lou Reed and The Byrds.
Elements of T. Rex and The Beatles were also commented on. He was also
dubbed Scotland's Morrissey or Leonard Cohen, whilst sharing contemporary
status with Paul Weller and Roddy Frame.
The albums 'Easy Pieces' (which included the singles 'Lost Weekend' and
'Brand New Friend') and 'Mainstream' followed, before he released his
eponymous titled debut solo album. For this album he was joined by ex
Lou Reed musicians Fred Maher and Robert Quine.
His solo career has gone from strength to strength with the releases of
'Don't Get Weird On Me Babe', 'Bad Vibes' and 'Love Story' albums which
have guaranteed his place as one of the most enduring and revered songwriters
these isles have produced.
Further evidence of this recently came in the form of the album 'The Collection'
and the widespread reviews of how 'on-form' his live shows have been.
