Idiosyncratic
indie-pop maverick, who wrote the classic A Girl Like You taken from the
shimmering retro-pop album Gorgeous George.
He started out in Glasgow by forming the highly respected northern soul
meets new york art punk band - Orange Juice, who had a memorable hit with
Rip It Up. His soulful baritone and lyrical style rendered him a contemporary
of acts like The Smiths, Pulp, The Lilac Time and Lloyd Cole.
His solo career took off with the albums Hope And Despair and Hellbent
On Compromise, before he added a number of producer credits to his achievements
with A House and The Frank & Walters.
His new album Doctor Syntax, recorded over three years, eclectically blends
his wilfully archaic lyrical tone with a range of old soul, new r&b, psychadelic
homages, cool britannia and a wry take on The Beatles. Uncut wrote "another
fine solo album" The Times - "Collins oozes pop quality" and The Sunday
Times - "will haunt all those lesser talents who strain every creative
sinew to come up with stuff a tenth as good".
