1999
was a great year for BEN & JASON.
Like Bell & Sebastian they are shaping up
to be the most fashionable, anti-fashion band around.
Melody Maker wrote: "Like Jeff Buckley during a power cut, Radiohead
revelling in rehearsals or Crowded House coping with a chip pan fire -
a giddly swirl of carefully constructed but vulnerably raw semi-acoustic
tales of love and loss."
Their debut mini-album, the marvellous 'Hello',
and it's equally acclaimed follow-up, 'Emoticons', mixed solid folk/ pop
with wry observations of life.
Working with Nick Drake's arranger - Robert Kirby - also boosted their
credibility. But their biggest leap forward came with their unlikely contributions
to Martine McCutcheon's debut album!
Having recently completed a nationwide tour with David Gray.
Their next release is 'Romeo and Juliet Are Drowning' (February 7th),
with additional tracks including a remix of Say Come (hello, djs...) and
a Randy Newman cover which Jason says "...will have you all scrabbling
for your hankies for one reason or another."
NME wrote: "A luxuriously tuneful cushion of songs about imaginery
friends and ice cold lovers - a tantalising introduction."
